5 Signs It’s Time to Rekey or Replace Your Locks

Locks don’t usually fail without warning. Long before you’re stuck outside or worried about who has a copy of your key, the hardware gives you signals. Learning to read them can save you money and protect your home. Here are five clear signs it’s time to rekey or replace, and how to tell which one you need.
1. You just moved in
This is the big one. When you take ownership of a new home or sign a new lease, you have no idea how many copies of the key exist — previous owners, contractors, realtors, dog walkers, neighbors. Rekeying the locks on day one is the single cheapest security upgrade you can make. It keeps your existing hardware but resets the key so every old copy stops working.
2. A key was lost or stolen
A lost key is a question mark you don’t want hanging over your door. If it was stolen along with anything showing your address, treat it as urgent. Rekeying makes that lost key useless without the cost of all-new locks.

3. The lock is sticky, loose, or hard to turn
A deadbolt that needs jiggling or a key that fights you on the way in is a lock wearing out from the inside. Internal pins and springs degrade over years of use. Once a lock starts sticking, it’s on a countdown to failing entirely — often at the worst moment. This is usually a replacement, not a rekey.
4. Visible wear, rust, or damage
Corroded, cracked, or loose hardware isn’t just ugly — it’s weaker against forced entry and more likely to jam. If the lock body itself is compromised, rekeying won’t help; the unit needs to be replaced with something solid.
5. You want one key for everything
If you’re juggling separate keys for the front door, back door, and garage, a locksmith can rekey them all to a single key. It’s a small convenience that makes daily life easier and reduces the chance of a lost key floating around.
Rekey or replace — the short version
Rekey when the hardware is in good shape but you want to control who has access. Replace when the lock is worn, damaged, or simply not secure enough for the door it’s protecting. Not sure which you need? ENM Locks & Doors will assess your hardware and give you a straight answer — no upselling.
